Champs Once Again

The top-ranked St. Xavier High School soccer team relied on its stellar defense and got a late goal from senior Joey Stolz to win its second straight KHSAA state title and fifth in six years with a 1-0 victory over No. 2 Paul Dunbar on Saturday night on the Bulldogs’ field.

This night was as close to chaos as you can get.  The boys game was scheduled to begin at 7:00, shortly after the girls championship game was completed.  To make the evening a little more exciting, heavy rain was scattered throughout the city – and then on the drive down I saw lightning strikes.  The girls championship game had a two hour lightning delay, went into overtime, and finally into penalty kicks.

By the time the girls game ended, around the time the boys game would have been finished, we could have been on our merry way home.  Instead, we had 30 minutes of warm-up time before our game finally started around 10 o’clock late Saturday night.

Needless to say it was a super crazy night.  Congratulations to Saint X on defending their state title and it has been a lot of fun covering their games this season.  Looking forward to next year!
